What’s gone wrong with democracy | The Economist

Izvrsna analiza današnje krize demokracije u ovotjednom Economistu.

Why has democracy lost its forward momentum? THE two main reasons are the financial crisis of 2007-08 and the rise of China. The damage the crisis did was psychological as well as financial. It revealed fundamental weaknesses in the West’s political systems, undermining the self-confidence that had been one of their great assets. Governments had steadily extended entitlements over decades, allowing dangerous levels of debt to develop, and politicians came to believe that they had abolished boom-bust cycles and tamed risk. Many people became disillusioned with the workings of their political systems—particularly when governments bailed out bankers with taxpayers’ money and then stood by impotently as financiers continued to pay themselves huge bonuses. The crisis turned the Washington consensus into a term of reproach across the emerging world. Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party has broken the democratic world’s monopoly on economic progress. Larry Summers, of Harvard University, observes that when America was growing fastest, it doubled living standards roughly every 30 years. China has been doubling living standards roughly every decade for the past 30 years. The Chinese elite argue that their model—tight control by the Communist Party, coupled with a relentless effort to recruit talented people into its upper ranks—is more efficient than democracy and less susceptible to gridlock. The political leadership changes every decade or so, and there is a constant supply of fresh talent as party cadres are promoted based on their ability to hit targets.

The TED Community Experiment on Intercultural Coordination – YouTube

Schellingova knjiga Strategy of Conflict nalazi se znate-već-gdje…

Viši porezi? Da, ali ne meni! – Reason-Rupe Surveys : Reason Magazine

Results from the Reason-Rupe poll actually demonstrate a willingness by a majority of Americans to increase taxes on the “wealthy.” However these preferences depend greatly on how one defines wealthy. The poll asked the standard question “Do you think the federal government should increase taxes on the wealthy,” with 69 percent in favor and 28 percent opposed. However, respondents in favor were then asked what household income they would use to define someone who is wealthy and should therefore pay higher taxes. Respondents consistently listed incomes that were above their own, even high-income respondents, suggesting that people may want to raise taxes, but just not on themselves.

The justification for several rounds of stimulus spending, as President Obama explains it, is to boost hiring and provide a “jolt” to the stalled economy. However, a recent IPSOS Public Affairs poll finds that a clear majority of Americans are not convinced these stimulus policies have had a positive or meaningful impact on the economy. Rather, 62 percent believe that the stimulus bills Congress has approved in recent years have resulted in greater debt, compared to 28 percent who believe they have helped the economy. College Tuition, Student Loans, and Unemployment : The New Yorker

James Surowiecki: Today Americans owe well over six hundred billion dollars in college debt. That’s a burden that’s hard to carry at a time when more than two million college graduates are unemployed and millions more are underemployed. Pravda i socijalna pravda

Moj cijeli tekst o gorespomenutoj temi…

Zbog toga možemo imati ili jednu ili drugu. Prva jamči jednakost pred zakonom, a druga… dovodi do političke proizvoljnosti i opće korupcije.

O “socijalnoj” pravdi

Charlemagne: Among the dinosaurs | The Economist
