Terry Eagleton Meets Roger Scruton : Intelligence Squared

Izvrsna rasprava o kulturi između ljevičara i desničara. Tek upoznajem Scrutona, i sve mi se više sviđa… Ali Eagleton je ovdje puno umjereniji negoli inače: vrlo podnošljiv.

Charlemagne: Among the dinosaurs | The Economist

Schumpeter: Think different | The Economist.

Why Tyrants Love the Murdoch Scandal – NYTimes.com

Why Tyrants Love the Murdoch Scandal – NYTimes.com.

Thus Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, who is trying to salvage a career fueled in part by Murdoch’s support, has given comfort to tyrants everywhere by proposing to constrain a press that is already hemmed in by draconian libel laws and an official secrets act. Visiting Nigeria — which, to its credit, recently emulated the good side of Great Britain by passing a freedom of information act — the prime minister called for some kind of “independent” press regulator to deal with abuses like phone hacking. There is another, less drastic option, of course: simply getting the police to enforce existing laws.

Fooled by Science by H. Allen Orr | The New York Review of Books

Fooled by Science by H. Allen Orr | The New York Review of Books.

you might expect The Social Animal to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox, and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of a chapter on evolutionary psychology, followed by one on child development, and so on, he tells a story. Following Rousseau’s approach in Émile, Brooks makes his larger points within a fictional narrative. This literary conceit is presumably intended both to keep the reader’s attention and to provide a natural frame for all the research that Brooks reports. So as the characters in his narrative live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development, and as they begin to date we hear about the biochemistry of sexual attraction. Nothing if not thorough, Brooks carries this conceit through to the death of one of his characters.Although Brooks’s scientific message is frustratingly unfocused, he emphasizes that the new sciences of human nature have revealed, among other things, the importance of the unconscious. Indeed “the central evolutionary truth is that the unconscious matters most.”

Mohandas Gandhi And The Problem With Purity | The New Republic

Izvrstan članak, prikaz nove Gandijeve biografije. Primjerice:

He quickly became enmeshed in a dispute over the use of the word “coolie,” which was then being used to describe Indian laborers. His initial comments on the word showed a surprising lack of awareness and empathy. As Lelyveld explains, “[Gandhi] concedes that coolies may sometimes be disorderly, may even steal. He knows but doesn’t make a point of saying that most of those he has now agreed to call coolies are of lower-caste backgrounds. If anything, caste is a subject he avoids…. Temporarily, at least, he doesn’t identify with them.” A couple of years later, while Gandhi was engaged in protecting the voting rights of educated Indians like himself, he wrote that his peers “have no wish to see ignorant Indians who cannot possibly be expected to understand the value of a vote being placed on the Voters’ List.”

The Front Line of Democracy by Radek Sikorski – Project Syndicate

I went to Benghazi to assess the intentions and credibility of the Transitional National Council and Libyan opposition. We brought medical supplies for the Benghazi Medical Center, where injured people from Misurata and elsewhere are being treated.

Around the table sat improbable allies: some had been prominent officials in Qaddafi’s regime; others had spent many years in prison under sentence of death. They were united in recognizing that their country deserved a new start. I was reminded of Poland’s “roundtable” in 1989, when Solidarity sat with the ruling communists to negotiate the end of the regime.
