What’s gone wrong with democracy | The Economist

Izvrsna analiza današnje krize demokracije u ovotjednom Economistu.

Why has democracy lost its forward momentum? THE two main reasons are the financial crisis of 2007-08 and the rise of China. The damage the crisis did was psychological as well as financial. It revealed fundamental weaknesses in the West’s political systems, undermining the self-confidence that had been one of their great assets. Governments had steadily extended entitlements over decades, allowing dangerous levels of debt to develop, and politicians came to believe that they had abolished boom-bust cycles and tamed risk. Many people became disillusioned with the workings of their political systems—particularly when governments bailed out bankers with taxpayers’ money and then stood by impotently as financiers continued to pay themselves huge bonuses. The crisis turned the Washington consensus into a term of reproach across the emerging world. Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party has broken the democratic world’s monopoly on economic progress. Larry Summers, of Harvard University, observes that when America was growing fastest, it doubled living standards roughly every 30 years. China has been doubling living standards roughly every decade for the past 30 years. The Chinese elite argue that their model—tight control by the Communist Party, coupled with a relentless effort to recruit talented people into its upper ranks—is more efficient than democracy and less susceptible to gridlock. The political leadership changes every decade or so, and there is a constant supply of fresh talent as party cadres are promoted based on their ability to hit targets.

BI: There Isn’t A Single Politician In Italy’s New Government

Demokracija bez političara? There Isn’t A Single Politician In Italy’s New Government.

Duhovit i potpuno otkačen članak o demokraciji bez političara i s namjesničkim vladama napisao je inače u ovotjednom Globusu Željko Kardum.

No dobro, ti namjesnici moraju dobiti i potporu parlamenta, ili?

The justification for several rounds of stimulus spending, as President Obama explains it, is to boost hiring and provide a “jolt” to the stalled economy. However, a recent IPSOS Public Affairs poll finds that a clear majority of Americans are not convinced these stimulus policies have had a positive or meaningful impact on the economy. Rather, 62 percent believe that the stimulus bills Congress has approved in recent years have resulted in greater debt, compared to 28 percent who believe they have helped the economy. Why do leftists opt for a closed society?

In Croatia, a number of young left-leaning extremists opt against joining EU. In spite of the present EU troubles, I claim that this is a short-sighted and a very dangerous policy proposal, especially in a country that needs some political rectification… But is there some logic in this move from internationalism to nationalism? History shows that there is… Read my article from here… tportal.

Pravda i socijalna pravda

Moj cijeli tekst o gorespomenutoj temi…

Zbog toga možemo imati ili jednu ili drugu. Prva jamči jednakost pred zakonom, a druga… dovodi do političke proizvoljnosti i opće korupcije.

O “socijalnoj” pravdi

Why are the leftist ideologues so interested in religion?

Really, why are the leftist ideologues like Žižek, Badiou, Agamben or Eagleton so interested in religion? Sometimes so much so, as in Eaglet0n’s case, that they feel they ought to viciously attack atheists, while at the same time granting religion “some potential” for (leftist) emancipation… Well, one reason might be that their philosophy differs from religious social doctrines by arc seconds, not by degrees…

Varijante kapitalizma i kritika OWS – The Guardian

Zgodan opis raznih vrsta kapitalizma. Varijante kapitalizma i kritika OWS.

Power and the Market | The Freeman | Ideas On Liberty

Libertarians look at situations where employees are unhappy yet don’t leave jobs (or where spouses are abused yet don’t leave their relationships) and often too quickly say, “Well, that’s their voluntary choice,” ignoring that the dynamics of the workplace or the family may involve exercises of power that lie outside the realms of politics or physical violence. Rather than ignore non-State forms of power, libertarians should readily acknowledge those realities but then use the items on our list of what the left overlooks to ask what the implications are.  First, the existence of “private” power does not necessarily make “public” power the appropriate solution.
